Why Smile?

Why did Howard decide to do Smile? Did he like movie version in his younger years (similar to the reason why he did Little Shop)? Or was he asked to do it and just thought it was a good story? And actually I thought I read somewhere that he did it because a person that was working on it before had died, and that's when he was asked to come on board?

  • Hi Danielle, Howard liked the movie and thought it would make a good musical. When he tried to get the rights, he found out that Marvin Hamlisch already had them and had been working with Carolyn Leigh (whom Howard greatly admired) on the musical. Ms Leigh had died and Marvin had tabled the project. When Howard expressed interest, the two started working together.
