"Aria for a Cow" vs. "I'm Proud to Be a Cow"

edited April 2015 in Songs
I have learned from this site that Howard had written a song for "Sesame Street" entitled "Aria for a Cow". As best as I can imagine, I get the feeling that the song was written for the character of Gladys, a vain bovine with aspirations as an actress and singer. Of course, the only song I REMEMBER her performing is one written by in 1981 Tony Geiss, entitled "I'm Proud to Be a Cow" (featuring backup vocals by a pair of Muppet horses).

So, let me just ask: Was "Aria For a Cow" written for this character, and did it take inspiration tonally from the earlier song? I'm deathly curious!
